Prospective students from other postsecondary institutions may apply for transfer admission. Academic achievement, personal conduct, and courses completed at an applicant’s current and prior institutions will be factors evaluated in the transfer admission process. The University of Miami will make admission decisions based exclusively on an applicant’s academic record at the college level for those candidates who have completed 24 or more transferable postsecondary credits. The University of Miami will consider high school academic record and test scores, if applicable, for those applicants who have completed fewer than 24 transferable postsecondary credits. Transfer credits must have been earned at a regionally accredited postsecondary institution at the time the coursework was completed.
Transfer candidates must possess a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 to be eligible for review. Competitive candidates will have well above this minimum GPA requirement.
Though not a part of the admission review process, the University of Miami expects enrolling transfer students to meet minimum computer requirements. These requirements may differ by school or college and can be found online.
The priority deadline to submit a transfer application and/or supporting documents for fall enrollment is April 1; and, the spring priority application deadline is November 1. Applications and/or supporting documents submitted after these priority dates will be considered on a space available basis. Candidates for both fall and spring enrollment are notified on a rolling basis. Transfer applicants must submit a(n): application and pay the nonrefundable application fee; official final high school transcript; official test scores, if applicable; official college transcripts from all postsecondary institutions previously attended; College Report(s) from all U.S. postsecondary institutions previously attended as a degree-seeking student and/or all U.S. postsecondary institutions attended where enrollment was full-time (12 or more semester hours); and, TOEFL and/or IELTS (non-native English speakers only).
Prospective transfer students with fewer than 24 postsecondary credits must apply to the University of Miami with test scores. Transfer applicants may self-report SAT or ACT scores on the Common Application or through the Applicant Portal after submitting the application. The Office of Undergraduate Admission super scores the SAT and ACT. There is not a preference for either test. For those who submit both SAT and ACT, the Admission Committee will use whichever test is comparatively strongest. The University of Miami neither recommends nor requires the optional writing section for either the SAT or ACT. The University of Miami does not require the science section of the ACT. Applicants can super score the Classic version of the ACT with the Enhanced version of the ACT.
Applicants who self-report scores will be required to submit official score reports if they are admitted and choose to enroll at the University of Miami.
School-Specific Admission Requirements
Transfer students applying to performance-based academic programs in the Frost School of Music may apply under test optional admission. Regardless of whether a transfer student applies to the Frost School of Music with or without test scores, all Frost School of Music applicants must complete an audition as part of the evaluation process. Transfer students applying to nonperformance-based majors in the Frost School of Music must apply with test scores.
Transfer students applying to the School of Architecture may apply under test optional admission. If a transfer student applies to the School of Architecture without test scores, they must submit a portfolio as part of the evaluation process.
Transfer students applying to Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree programs in the College of Arts and Sciences may apply under test optional admission. If a transfer student applies to the Art BFA program without test scores, they must submit a portfolio as part of the evaluation process. Regardless of whether a transfer student applies to the Theatre Arts BFA program with or without test scores, all Theatre Arts BFA applicants must complete an audition or submit a portfolio as part of the evaluation process.
Students must have left their prior institution(s) in good academic and social standing.
Transferable credit for coursework completed at another regionally accredited college or university will be subject to the University of Miami's transfer policy and process. Transfer applicants who have been denied admission more than twice will not be eligible to reapply.
Prospective students who have enrolled as degree-seeking students at other colleges or universities – regardless of the number of postsecondary credits earned – must apply as transfer students to the University of Miami. Prospective students who have graduated from high school and completed 24 or more transferable postsecondary credits in nondegree-seeking status must also apply as transfer students.
The University of Miami has executed an articulation agreement with the honors programs at both Miami Dade and Broward colleges.
