Statement of Purpose

The MAT in Music Teaching is a 1-year alternative to the Master of Music with Music Teaching Certification 2-year program and is designed for professional musicians with a music degree outside of music education.  This program provides required coursework that prepares students to independently pursue Florida K-12 music teaching certification. To do this after graduation, graduates will need to pass Florida State Teacher Certification Examinations, and complete teaching in a Florida school under the supervision of a school administrator for one year. Certification requirements will differ by state and can be altered by state boards of education at any time.

Goals

The goals of the MAT program in Music Education are for students to:

  • Develop foundational music teaching competencies and an understanding of music learning theories to teach music in a wide array of contexts, including the teaching of special learners in music.
  • Develop the ability to understand music assessment and curriculum development
  • Develop skills in integrating knowledge from the diverse professional literature into their teaching.

Student Learning Outcomes

Students in the MAT in Music Teaching Program will

  • apply knowledge of music teaching and learning theories by completing a Theoretical Applications Paper.
  • demonstrate competence in assessing music learning.
  • demonstrate a competence in curriculum development and implementation.
