Overview
This program is designed for the individual who has already completed a university degree in another area of music (i.e., musicology, music performance, studio music and jazz, music business, music engineering, music therapy, or the B.A. in music). The degree includes a full semester of student teaching in a K-12 setting. Graduates obtain a Florida Music Teaching Certificate, and become music teachers and administrators in K-12, preschool, or community settings throughout South Florida, the United States, and around the world. Job placement has been consistently strong for graduates seeking positions in schools.
Admission Requirements
All applicants to the Frost School must submit the following items:

· Official transcripts from every post-secondary school attended
This graduate degree program also requires submission of certain supplemental materials, including:

A student holding a B.M. degree in music may work toward certification in Music Education concurrently with the M.M. degree in Music Education. The B.M. degree must have included at least 14 credit hours of music performance, 12 credit hours of music theory, 3 credit hours of conducting, 6 credit hours of music history, and credit hours in performance ensembles. The culminating project for this degree takes place within MED 775. This program is approved by the Florida Department of Education and leads to initial certification as a music teacher for grades K-12.

For the Comprehensive Review, students will (1) design a curriculum unit for a K-12 classroom during their student teaching semester, (2) implement this unit during their student teaching semester, and (3) measure the impact of instruction on their students' learning. Students will write a full report and give an oral presentation to an MED committee.

Statement of Purpose
The purpose of the Master of Music degree program in Music Education with Teaching Certification is to prepare musicians without a music education background to obtain Florida K-12 music teaching certification. This 2-year program is designed for professional musicians with a music degree outside of music education.
Goals
The goals of the Master of Music degree program in Music Education with Teaching Certification are for students to:
- Develop foundational music teaching competencies and an understanding of music learning theories to teach music in a wide array of contexts.
- Demonstrate the generic and subject area competencies and the Florida Educational Accomplished Practices (FEAP) for becoming successful music teachers.
- Develop the ability to understand music assessment and curriculum development and apply it in the field.
- Develop skills in integrating knowledge from the diverse professional literature into their teaching.
Student Learning Outcomes
Students in the Master of Music degree program in Music Education with Teaching Certification will:
- apply knowledge of music education research and theory in a well-conceived scholarly paper.
- apply knowledge of music assessment practices in a music assessment creation project.
- will demonstrate knowledge of curriculum development and implementation through a capstone project in curriculum development
- demonstrate competencies to the core Professional Education courses required by the State of Florida in Teaching and Learning (TAL) courses,
- demonstrate teaching competencies related to the core courses in music education.
