Master of Science in Data Science (MSDS)

The Master of Science in Data Science is a thirty (30) credit interdisciplinary graduate program that combines the teaching of domain-specific and technical skills for analyzing large data sets.  Students interested in data science tools will be able to focus on tool principles and tool development, and students interested in data science application domains will be able to focus on the application of data science tools with a selection of courses that develop skills in one of three application areas.

The program also provides professional experience to students as part of their course of study.  Through a partnership with the Institute for Data Science and Computing, MSDS students have the opportunity to complete an internship with one of our industry partners and earn digital badges issued by the IBM Skills Academy.

Students from non-technical backgrounds are encouraged to apply.  Prerequisite courses include Linear Algebra (MTH 210 or Equivalent)Computer Programming (CSC 120 or Equivalent), and Probability & Statistics (MTH 224 or Equivalent).

This innovative degree program can be completed in one year and exists through the collaboration of several UM units, including the College of Arts & Sciences, the College of Engineering, the School of Architecture, the School of Communication, the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, & Earth Sciences, the School of Education & Human Development, and the Miami Herbert Business School.

While selecting a track is not required, the following options are available for MSDS students, through coursework offered by several academic units across the university:

  • Technical Data Science (College of Arts & Sciences and College of Engineering)
  • Smart Cities (School of Architecture)
  • Data Visualization (School of Communication)
  • Marine & Atmospheric Science (Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, & Earth Sciences)
  • Educational Measurement & Statistics (School of Education & Human Development)
  • Marketing (Miami Herbert Business School)

Regardless of the focus track, all degrees are awarded by the College of Arts & Sciences.
