Music Therapy

Music therapy involves using music as a tool to help people regain or develop important life skills, such as communication, physical movement, attention and memory, emotional growth or social skills.  Therapeutic techniques are based on scientific knowledge regarding how the human brain and body respond to and utilize musical stimuli.  Music therapists work with individuals of all ages who require treatment due to deficits in physical, cognitive or social/emotional functioning.  Potential employment sites include medical or psychiatric hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, special education or early intervention school settings, hospices, or correctional settings.  Music therapy can be a rewarding career for the individual who has a strong musical background and who is interested in a health care profession. MTY 645. Music in Rehabilitation. 3 Credit Hours.

Review of development and functioning for neurologically-based sensorimotor behavior. Survey of disabilities and diseases that typically result in sensorimotor deficits is deficits is included. Demonstration and practice of therapeutic techniques for sensorimotor deficits are also covered.

MTY 651. Music Therapy Research Methods. 3 Credit Hours.

This course is designed to help music therapy students: 1) integrate research findings into their clinical and/or educational practice, 2) implement research techniques into their work (e.g., through data collection or scholarly writing), and 3) become familiar with research procedures.

Psychological foundations of music with an emphasis on problems of perception, experimental esthetics, functional music, and measurement and diagnosis of musical ability and achievement. Related literature of experimental investigation is reviewed.
