Program Overview

Audition Required

Any student in good standing at the University of Miami wishing to declare a minor in music must audition on an instrument and be approved by the Frost School of Music as a minor.

The approval form is available HERE or in the Office of Undergraduate Studies.

A $350 fee per semester is assessed for private instrument and/or vocal instruction and must be paid prior to enrolling. Please note that private lessons may not be available on all instruments. Studio space varies from year to year. 

The Minor in General Music requires 15 credit hours,  12 of which must be earned at the University of Miami. 

Curriculum Requirements

Complete exactly 2 courses from the following: 16
Music Theory Skills I (AP Music Theory Score of 5 satisfies this requirement.)
Music Theory Skills II (AP Music Theory Score of 5 satisfies this requirement.)
Complete exactly 1 course from the following:3
Hip-Hop History, Culture, and Globalization
The Evolution of Jazz
African-American Gospel Music
Evolution of Rock
Understanding Music
Complete at least 6 credit hours from the following: 26
Private Lessons (entrance by audition & maximum of 4 semesters)
Ensembles (entrance by audition)
Music Electives
Total Credit Hours15

Students who receive AP credit for MTC 109 and MTC 110 must complete a minimum of 12 credits towards the Music minor.

Lessons are not mandatory for the minor; however, Music electives for the General Music minor are limited to courses for non-majors only unless approved by the FSOM Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies.
