Overview

The Department of Art & Art History offers undergraduate study centered on the intersection between the humanities and the liberal arts. Under the tutelage of highly regarded artists and art historians, our talented students engage in art historical research over a range of historical periods. Our program is designed to provide students with the skills needed for creative development and professional success in traditional and theory-based practices, and/or graduate study as a future endeavor.

Mission

The Art History program provides students with a broad exposure to the history of art, with the opportunity to gain an in-depth knowledge in specified subfields (e.g., European modernism; modern art in the Americas; contemporary world art; history of photography; Islamic art; Caribbean art; and Asian art). Students gain knowledge of major monuments, artists, styles, and art historical theories, and methodologies. Coursework promotes critical thinking, written and oral communication skills, visual analysis, curatorial studies, and independent research.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Students who major in art history will have a working knowledge of artists, art historical terminology, methodologies, and different interpretive frameworks of art.
  • Students who major in art history will gain effective oral communication skills in relation to artworks and the study of art history.
  • Students who major in art history will gain effective written communication skills in relation to artworks and the study of art history, and will be able to locate and analyze primary and secondary sources relevant to research in art history.
