Overview

The College of Arts & Sciences offers a five-year interdisciplinary program offering students an opportunity to earn both bachelors and masters degree.

The BS in Global Health Studies/MA in Global Health & Society may be completed be students in the Pre-Med track of the Global Health Studies major.  Students who elect to complete the MA in Global Health & Society in one-year are required to complete 31 credits of graduate study.  This unique graduate degree option provides additional preparation in the social sciences and humanities, as well as courses in epidemiology to strengthen a medical school or doctoral program application.

This five-year program provides a comprehensive framework covering the sociopolitical, economic, and geographic factors that, in addition to biomedical factors, impact health conditions of various countries and populations throughout the world.  Students gain the social science knowledge and methodologies to integrate stakeholders and researchers in the design, implementation, interpretation of community-based participatory studies.  Additionally, graduates of our program acquire skills in leadership and advocacy, and combined with a deep understanding of policy and governance, are prepared to assist private, government, non-profit, and for-profit organizations formulate new global and community health strategies.

4+1 students who took equivalent courses at the undergraduate level may substitute courses to avoid duplication, with advisor approval.

Language Requirement (M.A.)

Students are required to demonstrate foreign language competency. Students may meet this requirement by using one of the options below:

  • Fulfilling the language requirement in their undergraduate career.
  • Passing two courses taught in the target language at the 600-level or above,
  • Completing a Directed Independent Language Study (DILS) program, or
  • Passing a language competency exam with a qualified speaker.

Students may petition for a waiver of examination if they have gained target language competency in another manner (i.e, native speaker, upper division coursework in target language, Peace Corps service, IB credits, or Defense Language Proficiency Test).”

Students in the 4+1 program may choose to link their undergraduate and graduate capstone experiences into a unifying project.

Admission Requirements

Students who wish to enter the 5-year BS/MA program must satisfy undergraduate admission requirements as well as the admission requirements for the M.A. in Global Health and Society, as listed in the Academic Bulletin. 

Students in the BS in Global Health and Society (Pre-Med track) must complete the requirements outlined by the Office of Pre-Health Advising and Mentoring, passed with a grade of C- or higher with an overall GPA of 2.0, plus all existing requirements for a BS degree per the Academic Bulletin.
