ARH 421. Reimagining Modernity: Haitian Art and Art History. 3 Credit Hours.

Haiti is a revolutionary society born out of the violence of slavery and revolution during the age of Enlightenment. It can be argued that it is a site of a double artistic modernity; post 1804 with the establishment of the Republic of Haiti and later the first art school in the Americas, and post 1943 following the founding of the Centre d’Art. However, Haiti is rarely considered as a site of modernity. Instead historically afflicted by incalculable crises and unspeakable violence at the hands of man and nature, the nation has been sidelined in art historical narratives in the Americas before and arguably since the 1943 renaissance. This class re-centers Haiti in the discipline of art history as a space that offers fascinating challenges to and possibilities for decentered global art histories. Drawing on seminal scholarship, unique archival resources and art collections at the University of Miami, the city of Miami and beyond, this seminar traces artistic practices and philosophies in and from Haiti that were trans-Atlantic in their formation and always global in their relations.
