HEDÂ 610. Foundations of Health Professions Education. 2 Credit Hours.
Current trends in health professions education transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries, thus, providing more opportunities for interprofessional learning in areas such as patient-centered, community-based care; the integration of artificial intelligence; data-driven quality improvement; competency-based, time variable models of education; and systems-based practice. Learners will gain an appreciation for the driving theoretical frameworks, concepts, historical and contextual factors that influence current trends across five core domains: Inclusive excellence, teaching and learning, global health education, leadership, and educational scholarship. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, participants will explore innovative, data-driven methods for addressing some of the most complex challenges in the health professions.
Requisite: Must be an OHED major- OHED_MHPE.

HEDÂ 615. Academic Coaching and the Science of Learning. 3 Credit Hours.
Learning in the health sciences requires more than the acquisition of scientific knowledge and clinical skills: In an era of exponential knowledge growth, learning how to learn is a core, interdisciplinary competency. Participants will be able to build high-impact coaching skills through techniques such as active listening, open-ended questioning and growth mindset feedback that will build mutual trust and engage learners. They will develop adaptive, individualized learning plans grounded in the how of encoding, consolidating, and retrieving information; use authentic cases, role playing, and deliberate practice to identify individual learning challenges; and implement evidence-based metacognitive strategies. Participants will engage in critical, guided self-reflection to interrogate the effectiveness of learning strategies used in the past and analyze how those strategies have evolved. They will facilitate the implementation of evidence-based, self-regulated learning strategies such as goal setting, strategic planning, retrieval practice, spaced repetition, interleaving, and elaborative interrogation.
